I had a pretty heated discussion at work today about how “fair” it is for “rich” people to pay a higher percentage of their income soley because they have more money… For some reason, I have a serious problem with it. Sure, I have a healthy dose of envy for “rich” people with multiple homes and cars… but at the same time, I don’t really see it as being fair that they are forced to pay a larger percentage of their income in taxes…
I made the analogy that it would be like going to the grocery store to buy milk, and when you get to the counter, instead of paying $2 like everyone else, you have to pay $3 because you make more. Fair?
When you hear the term “rich” most people invision some fat-cat Wall Street guy in a suit smoking a cigar in the back of a club drinking aged scotch.. Its easy to vilify “the rich” because you don’t see them as the guy next door, or the couple that has been frugally saving and investing their hard earned paychecks and have built up a fairly good income.. While I personally don’t make over $250k a year, I certainly don’t think it is way out of the realm of possibility that I could someday make that much…
Anyway… then I came home, and saw this video of Barney Frank, a “congressional leader”:
For some reason, a “rich” guy saying that there are plenty of other rich folks that they could be taxing is quite a scary concept.
These are going to be the guys running this country when/if Barack Obama is elected President…
Wonderful.
