Nerds: Revenge of the Stereotypes…

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

Before I get into the meat of this post, I want everyone to go take a read of this wikipedia entry for the term “Nerd.” To most people, the terms ”Nerd,” ”Dork” and “Geek” are interchangable… but the terms are actually quite different. Check out this article about How to Tell the Difference between Nerds and Geeks. I point these out so that everyone has a clear reference toward what I’m going to be posting about.

While I’m not going to get into all the things I’ve done in my life that give me some type of “nerd street cred”.. I’ll just say that I’ve been playing around with computers since I got my first Commodore Vic-20 back in 1982, ran my own bulliten board system and played AD&D throughout high school, and have been gainfully employed in the “Internet Industry” for the past 10 years. I’d like to think I’m not quite as bad as most nerd/geek/dork stereotypes, but I certainly have a few characteristics that would get me labelled as such.

Sometimes an Apple a Day, just doesn’t cut it.

I have hypothyroidism. I’ve had the condition since I was in 2nd Grade, and have been taking medicine for it since I was a wee lad. But in the last few years, I have neglected it. It just isn’t something that I ever think I need to worry about, because when your thyroid is off-kilter, you really don’t feel the effects. Its one of those things where you might feel a little “off”, but nothing worth worrying about.

But knowing how the thyroid works, and all the things that are effected by it, its usually in your best interest to have it checked by a doctor, and regulated via thryoid hormone replacement medicine.

Spirit and Opportunity… NASA’s little rovers.

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

Spirit RoverI just had to write a post about the Mars rovers. These things are incredible. These little guys landed on Mars in January 2004, and were only supposed to last for 90 days. After 3 and a half years, they are still going strong and will continue to explore the “Red Planet” for possibly another couple of years.

Now, this might be a case where NASA understated the usefulness of these rovers, in the hopes of overdelivery… but it still is amazing that these rovers have lasted so long. They’ve been able to find evidence of “wetness on Mars that could have sustained microbial life.” In the next few years, what else could be discovered?

This press release from NASA goes into a bit more detail : NASA Extends Operations for Its Long-Lived Mars Rovers

To date, Spirit has driven 7.26 kilometers (4.51 miles) and has returned more than 102,000 images. Opportunity has driven 11.57 kilometers (7.19 miles) and has returned more than 94,000 images.

Thats pretty amazing for a pair of rovers made to last for only 90 days.

What does your car say about you?

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

You can tell a lot about a person by the vehicle that they drive. I believe its an indicator of how they operate in life. If a person maintains a clean car, they will tend to live a fairly organized life. Someone that keeps a messy car, will operate their life the same way.

But how about the type of car? Does that say something about you? Does your choice of vehicle say more about you that you think? I believe it does. Just like pets, people resemble the type of car they drive.

We have a new logo…

Friday, October 12th, 2007

The title says it all… after what I would consider a very successful contest, I have selected a winner of our logo contest. Congratulations go out to Janice, who submitted the winning logo. This talented artist did a great job of putting together a logo that will truly represent this blog as we move forward.

We had over 25 unique entries to our contest, and it really was a debate over which one to choose. I actually did an informal poll of all my advertising and design industry friends, and the majority picked this logo as the best. We all thought that it was versatile and encapsulated my blog the best.

Now that I have a logo to rally behind, the real work will have to begin. Along with the continuing writing duties I have, I’m going to have to come up with a new website design to compliment my great logo.
