We… just bought a Wii…

I didn’t originally go into Target thinking I’d be coming out with a Wii… but thats how it turned out.

I actually went in to look for a tent. My son and I were supposed to be going camping this weekend with my brother and his family, but when I tried looking for my tent, I couldn’t find it. So, thinking.. “hey, I can just pick up one at the new Target that just opened up.” My son and I trudged into Target to check out their selection of camping gear.

But, as fate would have it, to get to the tents and camping gear, you must pass by… well, you guessed it… the electronics.

(EDIT: for some reason, this experience seems to have turned my writing into a literary work)

Peeking into the gaming aisle, I spotted it… the solitary box with “Wii” written on it. Could this be it? I hadn’t seen one of those.. (not to be overly dramatic, most retailers have been out of the Wii since its release, and only periodically get a tiny shipment in each month) So, I asked the guy in the red shirt… “Is that the only Wii you have?” It was.

“Well, set me up, my good man” I said with a grin, as my son beamed.

The thought of camping seemed like a fleeting memory, as the credit card was swiped and the thoughts of playing weeble-wobble tennis went through our heads.

As we walked out of the store, with the box clearly visible in our cart, we were sure that everyone in the store had taken notice that, yes, WE had a Wii!

I put the gaming device into the back of my vehicle and we sped away, talking anxiously about how cool its going to be when we hook this baby up. I just had to call someone, anyone, to tell them the news. I picked my brother… who is about the only person I know that would get excited about my newest purchase. With a tinge of guilt, I told him.. “I don’t think we’ll be camping with you guys tonight…”

Of course, his wife was none to pleased. She had spent quite a bit of time organizing this little camp out, and despite the thought of slogging through the rain and sleeping on the ground, she was bound and determined to see it through. But despite her best attempts, she knew there was no real way she was going to be able to compete with my new purchase. I convinced her to allow me to bring it their house, and play it with the kids (read: me and my brother).

As the night wore on, we finally got her to give the Wii a chance. We first set her up to play tennis, where, she did ok, but she was still unconvinced that this was a good thing. That was until… we set her up to the Boxing game. As she pounded away at an anonymous face in the boxing ring, you could tell she was enjoying herself. She still refused to smile or act like she enjoyed it… in that way that says, “I refuse to let you see that I’m enjoying this.” But at the same time, she’s giggling and continuing to play hard.

At the end of the evening, as I’m packing up the Wii to take it home… I hear her mutter, “Yeah, I guess its ok…”

Success!
