Big Office Weight-off…

Friday, January 19th, 2007

It seems that for some reason, this new year has brought on some serious dieting in my office. There are a number of us guys that are dangerously close to being considered “fat”… So we are all trying our different methods to try and lose some weight. As an added “incentive” we’ve started talking about doing a “Big Office Weight-Off”… basically we’ll weight ourselves, take some photos, and then see who can lose the most weight.

We’ll see how it goes. Seems fun..

UPDATE: We had our weigh in, and I topped 246. Ouch. We took pictures, and started a chart that is now hanging in our office for all to see. We have approximately 10 people now competing. The prize? Weight-loss and the recognition of our peers. We will re-weight ourselves on a weekly basis to chart our progress.

Speed eating…

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

Ok, yesterday was one of those days that didn’t seem to have enough hours in it during the day to get everything accomplished, AND be properly nurished. I ate 1 granola bar (90 cals) for breakfast, and then didn’t eat again until about 3pm, when I had a turkey sandwich from Publix, with a side of coleslaw and potato salad. I’m sure the sandwich was probably acceptable diet-wise, because I didn’t use mayo. But the potato salad and cole-slaw I had with it was terribly fattening, but I was starving, and it was the quickest thing I could get in the time allotted. Not only that, but then someone brought in a frozen ice-cream cake for a birthday… and well, not to be rude, I ate a piece.

Anyway.. I went home and made 1 smallish round-tip steak and some frozen potatos.

Not really a great diet day, but portions were smaller, and I didn’t have any sodas…. So who knows. I guess it was a wash.

This weekend…

It was a long, and not so healthy one… I can tell you that.

Friday was a busy, but exhausting day. After going out until late on Thursday, I was beat going into work. It was all I could do to keep from falling asleep throughout the day. Food wise, I went to the Original Steakhouse with some co-workers. I had a salmon with rice. It was very good, but a bit small for me (hey, it was technically the right size, but I’m a big boy.. ) I had sort of made plans to meet up with a friend that was in town, but I ended up passing out at around 8pm, and didn’t wake up until 9am Saturday. Apparently I needed the sleep.

Saturday, I was awakened at 9am, by a text message on my phone from a friend. “Wanna help me move?” hehe.. WANT to? Needless to say, I did… had a Turkey foot-long sub from Subway for lunch, then went out later to a friends “B-Day extravaganza” Started at a small bar in Fort Lauderdale at around 9pm, and ended (atleast for me) at around 4am at a Diner eating eggs and hash browns. In bed by around 4:30am.

Sunday, woke up around 1pm. Got dressed, watched some football, then went to eat some Snapper Franchaise… This time, I couldn’t pass up the Franchaise sauce, but I did have veggies instead of mash potatoes. Had a couple of Sprites with it.

Overall, a decent weekend. Diet-wise, probably not so good… but socially I had fun.

The Fiddler…

Friday, January 12th, 2007

Last night, I went to a Search Engine Seminar hosted by a local interactive marketing association. There were representatives of Google, Yahoo, MSN, and Ask. Information gathered? Zero. I don’t know what I expected to hear, but it ended up being a sales pitch by each of the major search engines. I don’t want to say it was useless, because I did get to meet a bunch of smart local people that are doing some really neat things in the industry.

Afterward, we all went to a Jazz club and watched “Randy the Fiddler” play. Amazing.

As for the diet… well… yeah. Way too many beers were drunk, and I didn’t get anything to eat… so does that equal out?

Yeah… I didn’t think so either.

Its like Chips…

I know I’ve been writing a lot about diets and weight-loss lately… but when I saw this video, I almost peed my pants. Enjoy.

Snapper Franchaise…. without the Franchaise.

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

Yep… I know what you are thinking… I went to my local restuarant/bar/hangout place, and ordered the Snapper Franchaise, which is a Snapper filet, lightly breaded with a creamy white sauce.. I figured, with the theme of trying to cut calories I would try the Snapper without the white sauce. And instead of mashed potatoes, I opted for double veggies. Also had a side salad with italian dressing.

I must say, this tasted really good. I don’t know how it measures up calorie-wise, but it was a “cut-back”… of course, I probably added more calories by drinking a couple of light beers earlier in the evening, and then washing this meal down with a Sprite.

But, I think I did alright for the day, since breakfast consisted of a granola bar (150 cal), and lunch was a can of Progresso soup (180 cal) and a piece of Cuban bread (unknown… but probably up there).

Yummy…. tuna.

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

I tried to buy some low-cal stuff at the grocery store, and even tried to calculate some meals that would get me under 1500 calories a day.. Thats not the easiest, when a slice of bread is 110 calories… so making a simple tuna sandwich on wheat bread already sets you back 220 calories, thats before you put on the tuna (150 calories) with some mayo (100 calories).. Thats a whopping 470 calories for a tuna sandwich.

Yes, I could probably get away with no mayo, but how gross is that?

Ok.. the weight loss begins today!

I’ve been slowly gaining weight for… well… all my life. Yesterday, I stepped on my scale, and realized that I am at my heaviest weight that I’ve EVER been (I just scaled in at 246lbs). My self-image is shot, and today is the time to do something about it.

I’m not going to fool myself into thinking I’ll start going to the gym and start eating healthy. I will probably never stop drinking beer, and never eating junk food is unreasonable. The fact is, I’m a lazy glutton.

That all being said, I’m going to make some simple calorie cutting, and add some moderate walking to start. Smaller portions and replacing sodas with water. My ultimate goal is to lose some weight, without impacting my social lifestyle. We’ll see how it goes.

Weight loss will be slow, as it should be. My primary goal is to eventually get down to less than 200 lbs. But I’m taking it at 10% increments. So, my first goal is to lose 24 lbs. Wish me luck.
